The Mississippi Department of Mental Health (DMH) supports a better tomorrow by making a difference in the lives of Mississippians with mental illness, substance abuse problems, and intellectual / developmental disabilities one person at a time. DMH envisions a better tomorrow where the lives of Mississippians are enriched through a person driven and recovery-oriented public mental health system that promotes excellence in the provision of services and supports. DMH believes that services and support options should be designed to meet the particular needs of the person and should be available and easily accessible in the communities where people live.
Individuals served at DMH’s programs are building independence through a comprehensive system of services and supports to improve daily living skills. Until recently, learning and life skill resources had to be created manually. This meant hand-making and posting paper charts, schedules, learning games, and comprehensive task boards throughout the programs. It became clear that the residents and outpatients required a more engaging way to interact with daily living lessons and activities and the DMH required a viable solution to deliver these assistive therapy strategies.
The CARETILES Solution
The CARETILES consumer engagement solution was selected as the integrated tool to deliver learning and therapy as part of an individuals care plan. Tied into the CoCENTRIX Coordinated Care Platform (CoCENTRIXccp) is Talkingtiles, a CARETILES mobile app for I/DD, which enables accountable data exchange between the health record, the consumer, and their circle of support.
Talkingtiles is an assistive care application that provides therapy for daily living, communication, learning, and social interaction for individuals with a special need, disability or behavioral health disorder. Talkingtiles delivers interactive and engaging learning experiences such as flash card games, number activities, interactive quizzes, visual schedules, and routines.
Talkingtiles made it easy for the staff of the programs. Only one versatile tool to learn that can be used in a variety of therapeutic and educational plans. talkingtiles can be tailored with flexible layouts, colors, buttons, fonts, and images to fit each individual’s needs and level of learning.
Talkingtiles provided non-verbal individuals with the ability to express their wants and needs. Something as simple as expressing what they want for snacktime gave residents the opportunity to make a choice, which increased their sense of independence and self esteem.
